Privacy & Cookie Policy

What is a Privacy Policy? | Lens On Backwards

Firstly, what is a Privacy Policy?

A privacy policy isn’t as scary as it sounds. It’s a company policy which outlines and explains in easy-to-read language, how an organisation (ours - in this case) manages the personal information held about you. The Privacy Act of 1988 (Privacy Act) means most businesses need to have a privacy policy on file. This is why you’ll see privacy policies published on every good website you visit - typically in the footer. Why the footer? Well, in the footer the privacy policy is easily accessible, but not necessarily in your face - because it is not always the most exciting thing to read and often isn’t what you came to the website for!

What is a Cookie? | Lens On Backwards

Cookies policies are usually legally binding. The point of having one is to explain to you, as a website user, how a company intends to utilise/or not utilise your data and the company's beliefs regarding your online privacy rights.

And what is a Cookie Policy?

What is a cookie?

A cookie is a file. A digitally encrypted file. These files can be set up by companies to exist in the storage on your devices (whether you use IOS or Android) and the storage in your browsers to track how often you visit or revisit a website. They help companies to understand how you navigate a website and mean that companies can create a better website for you to navigate easily - whether you are on mobile, desktop or tablet.

Still unsure? Or concerned? Don’t be. Most of the time, the often deemed ‘stalking’ process of utilising cookies on a website is employed by businesses for the user’s benefit. Some examples of how cookies are used are:

  • Saving items that you placed in a digital shopping cart

  • Saving the language preferences you specified you wanted on a website

  • Using analytics tools and data to track ‘trends’ based on collective data, provided by individuals, just like you, to enable businesses to provide products or information that the overall majority are searching for in future

  • Providing retargeting ads to social media visitors

  • Saving necessary information (such as user logins) to utilise Content Management Systems on websites or enable users to comment on blogs or articles and provide their own opinions e.g. YouTube, TripAdvisor

  • Utilising tracking pixels from third-party services such as Facebook or Google
